From MC Lars Across Social Media:

Stepping onto the Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland as an 8-year-old was pure magic – the spooky aesthetic, eerie cobwebs, amazingly designed rooms, iconic animatronics and hauntingly beautiful ravens captured my young imagination.
Little did I know that this attraction would become a pivotal moment in my life. Growing older, I discovered Edgar Allan Poe, realizing the Haunted Mansion was modeled in part on the American gothic literary tradition. Learning about its metaphorical significance as a decayed literary genre (one that mirrored anti-transcendentalist’s confrontation of the dark side of Manifest Destiny) fascinated me, drawing me closer to Poe’s dark and introspective writings.
Visiting Walt Disney World with Schaffer the Darklord literally a week before COVID shut down the world in early 2020 made memories to treasure. As we rode the Haunted Mansion together, I saw Schaffer in awe especially at the dancing ballroom scene, saying under his breath, “This is awesome!” He had never been to Disney World and had never rode any Haunted Mansion ride, so he was seeing it for the first time. Sharing that moment solidified our decision to write the song, a testament to our fascination with its spooky charm. (Side note, originally “999” was going to be an album ALL ABOUT the Haunted Mansion, but there is so much other great Disney stuff to write about, we decided to branch out. But, the album’s title, as you are aware, is from the Ghost Host’s famous line, “We have 999 happy haunts here, but there’s room for a thousand. Any volunteers?”)
The Haunted Mansion left an indelible mark on my life, igniting my passion for gothic literature and storytelling. As the world went into lockdown shortly after our Baby Yoda tour, I thought a lot about that ride, and how it presents death in a creative way. Maybe it’s not the end? The magic of that childhood journey remains etched in my memories, inspiring me to explore Poe’s eerie tales and delve deeper into the world of storytelling. It’s a place where funny and spooky beautifully collide, and I’m forever grateful for the opportunities it gave me to share my love for spooky and funny storytelling with the world. The Haunted Mansion – forever a cherished part of my creative journey.
