Jordan Peele Credits ‘Get Out’ Script To Smoking Weed

It’s no secret that one of the greatest ‘side effects’ of cannabis is the facilitation of the creative spark. Microdosing a sativa-dominant strain throughout your day could be the easiest way to get your creative juices flowing, and we’re seeing more and more artists give credit to the ganja for helping them get through some of their finest work. One of the latest prominent celebrities to pay their respects for the plant is the filmmaker, comedian and actor Jordan Peele, who just won his first Academy Award for Best Screenplay for his horror movie Get Out.

While Peele’s Oscar was clearly his most prestigious and most talked about award, Peele also nabbed a couple of major honors at the Film Independent Spirit Awards—an awards ceremony that recognizes some of the best independent films in the country.

Peele was able to secure both the awards for Best Director and Best Screenplay—two of the highest honors at the event.

During his acceptance speech, Peele was sure to include cannabis in his list of influences for the film.

“This project didn’t start as a statement, it began as me wanting to make a film in my favorite genre,” Peele explained during his speech.

“I sat down, and I would smoke a little bit of weed while I try to write a mind-bending horror film. At some point, I just followed the truth and realized there are people that are locked up for smoking less weed than I smoked while I wrote the movie.”

Although there was obviously a hint of humor in the comedian’s voice throughout the speech, it was obvious that he was, in fact, totally serious about his attribution to weed.

Final Hit; Jordan Peele And Weed

If you’ve been a fan of Peele’s work throughout his career, it should come as no surprise that the filmmaker was quick to give weed its due credit.

Even dating back to his early MadTV days, some of Peele’s most famous skits involved a plethora of his own characters smoking the ganja.

The tradition continued when he and close friend Kegan Michael-Key got their own show on Comedy Central, Key and Peele, which aired from 2012-2015.

Many of those original sketches involved Peele as a hardcore toker, including the infamous sketch that tried to prove that a good ol’ fashioned wake and bake is better for you, health-wise, than coffee.

And let’s not forget the movie Keanu, in which Peele was, essentially, just the movie’s generic stoner character.

So after an illustrious weed-driven career spanning over a decade, it’s nice to see Peele pay a little homage to the plant, especially on the heels of his most successful career endeavor to date.
