Blend is a group-messaging app with a focus on content. By adding bots into its chat interface, the company is looking to tap into the “AI revolution,” joining tech giants of the likes of Apple, Snap Inc. and Facebook.
The premise is pretty simple: users create chat groups and then add “Genies”—bots that share news and updates based on users’ declared interests.
“People use Blend as any other messenger, to make plans or chat. What we do is also integrate breaking news into the platform,” co-founder Matt Geiger told Benzinga in a recent conversation.
On 4/20, America’s original designated “weed holiday,” Blend compiled data from public group chats of 300,000 Millennial users and discovered how youngsters talk about marijuana and other related issues.
But, how did they know what to look for?
Several factors came into play here.
On one hand, the Blend team is pretty young, with Geiger, “one of the older members of the team,” barely 25.
“We have this kind of young, pop-culture, intuitive knowledge about this stuff,” he explained.
On the other hand, Blend stays current through its high-school influencer group, which consists of 400 kids providing product feedback and trends updates.
So, without further ado, here are some of the findings.
