Kinky Skunk: How Pornhub’s Pot-Related Searches Went Through the Roof On 4/20

There are various myths and adaptations as to what the origin of 4/20 really is. No matter where the celebration came from, there’s one thing we know for sure: on the 20th day of April, the world grows sunny with the advent of International “Weed Day.” On this date, people from all around the globe blaze up in the name legalization, medicine and plain ol’ chillin’.

You are probably familiar with the expression “to leave someone high and dry.” Well, this 4/20 has left us high, but definitely not dry. In fact, as you will find out below, it was quite moist.

According to a data set that PornHub shared with us exclusively, this April 20, the cannabis-related porn demand skyrocketed. And, the numbers are impressive: the stats showed a 464 percent increase in canna-porn pursuit for men and 365 percent for women, with a total growth of 645 percent throughout the whole U.S.

The age group that took home the prize for blasting the search bar with such topics was—unsurprisingly—those aged 18 to 24, with a 552 percent increase in weed-related searches.

After that, numbers keep dropping from one age group to the next, until we reach 65+, where the rise was of 275 percent. We guess there are way more pot-smoking, porn-loving grandpas and grandmas than we thought.

As far as specific wording goes, the most popular term was “marijuana,” which witnessed an 817 percent increase in search traffic, followed by “weed” (710 percent) and “420” (564 percent).

This is slightly surprising, and counterintuitive, since Google Trends shows that, in general, the searches for “weed” were almost three times higher than those for “marijuana” in the week of 4/20. Also, in the matter of pot-porn related searches, “smoking weed” was widely popular, as was “high on weed”—which sounds an awful lot like something a 65+ would search for.

And what about political geography?

As stated above, the statistics revealed a 645 percent overall growth in cannabis-associated porn searches across the United States.

And the highest state? Wyoming, with a solid 773 percent upsurge. Not far behind came Vermont, with 764 percent, followed by South Dakota and Montana (both 764 percent). The last one in line was Mississippi, with a still pretty impressive 501 percent increase.

If we look at the eight states that currently legislate in favor of recreational cannabis, we will see only one of them is featured in the list that shows a significant up rise in canna-porn searches, and that was Alaska, with a 714 percent increase.

Out of the remaining seven, Maine, Washington and Massachusetts are listed as some of the “least high” states during the 420 porn feast. This undoubtedly raises the question of whether or not legalization is related to the level of “guilty pleasurableness” and consequent quality of the matter as jerking-off material.
